sume Fregean colourings, as some colourings do not communicate any-
thing. I show that this claim relies on a narrow understanding of com-
municative intentions, inconsistent with Grice’s (1957), and that even a
subjective notion of communicative intentions does not support the dis-
tinction. Therefore, I vindicate the communicative role of colourings.
