Abstract
Dependence utterances can be built with an adverbial adjunct phrase, e.g. "Depending on how the first round goes, I might stop". They express a complex conditional dependence between two sets of alternatives. Contrary to finite "depend", this construction exhibits diverse syntactic forms that challenge previous approaches. We show how Dynamic Inquisitive Semantics and Free Association with focus solve this compositional issue in English and French. We provide a single entry for "depend" that can retrieve its implicit modal base and capture the different clause types and alternative triggers.
